Safety check Questions :

The Examiner will ask you two questions at the start of your driving test, there will be one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’.

Q1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

A1. Identify dipstick, describe check of oil level against the max/min markers on dipstick.

Q2. Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

A2. Before starting the engine the steering will feel heavy, upon starting the engine the steering will become much lighter.

Q3. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

A3. Identify high/low markings on header tank and check level of coolant (must only be topped up on a cold engine).

Q4. Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear; make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle.

A4. Apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying parking brake (handbrake) so that when it is fully engaged it secures itself, it should not be at the end of its working travel.

Q5. Open the bonnet, identify where the screen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the level of fluid.

A5. Identify the screen washer reservoir and explain how to check level.

Q6. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

A6. Check is carried out using the control (switch on ignition if necessary).

Q7. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of brake fluid.

A7. Identify reservoir and check level against max/min markings.

Q8. Show me how you would check hat the direction indicators are working.

A8. Switch on hazard lights, walk around vehicle and check that all indicator bulbs are working (Switch on ignition if necessary- do not start the engine).

Q9. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (I can assist you, if need to switch on the ignition please do not star the car).

A9. Switch on the ignition (do not start the car!), operate the brake pedal and the examiner will check that the brake lights are working.

Q10. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

A10. Operate the brake pedal, the brakes should not feel spongy or slack.

Q11. Tell me how you would check the headlights & tail lights are working. (No need to exit vehicle).

A11. Switch on ignition and operate switch, explain that you would normally walk around the vehicle.

Q12. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and tell me how tyre pressures should be checked.

A12. Use manufactures guide, use a reliable tyre pressure gauge, check pressures when cold.

Q13. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe for use on the road.

A13. Tyres should be visually checked to ensure no cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the tyre and all the way around the outer circumference.

Q14. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

A14. Switch on ignition and operate wash/wipe control.

Q15. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear4 the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.

A15. Set the relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction and heated rear screen (Engine should not be started for this demonstration).

Q16. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them.

A16. Switch on the ignition and operate the switch and explain that would use it/them when visibility is seriously reduced.

Q17. Show me how you would switch you headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on.

A17. Switch on the ignition and dipped headlights, operate the control to switch on main beam and explain that the main beam warning light will be on.

Q18. Tell me how to make sure that the head restraint is correctly adjusted so that it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

A18. Head resistant should be adjusted so the rigid part of the restraint is at least as high as the eyes or the top of the ears and as close to the head as possible.

Q19. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with you anti lock braking system.

A19. Warning light will illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.
